{"id":774,"date":"2016-08-27T14:20:55","date_gmt":"2016-08-27T22:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/?p=774"},"modified":"2018-02-16T11:17:51","modified_gmt":"2018-02-16T19:17:51","slug":"checking-windows-10-backups-to-usb-hard-drive-using-windows-backup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/checking-windows-10-backups-to-usb-hard-drive-using-windows-backup\/","title":{"rendered":"Checking Windows 10 Backups to USB hard drive and RDX (using Windows backup)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If we&#8217;ve configured your system to run backups using Windows backup to a fixed USB hard drive (always attached), here&#8217;s some instructions on how to check to make sure they&#8217;re working.<\/p>\n<p>You should do this <strong>often<\/strong>. \u00a0If your backup stops working for some reason, you&#8217;ll want to know asap so the situation can be corrected.<\/p>\n<p>We also may have configured <strong>email notifications<\/strong> when the backup has been successful. \u00a0 Check for these emails too, but know that those are meant as a convenience feature. It&#8217;s still important to check backups manually to make sure they&#8217;re working.<\/p>\n<h2>Checking your backups<\/h2>\n<p>1. Make sure your backup drive is attached<br \/>\n2. Launch <strong>Backup &amp; Restore<\/strong> by clicking Backup and Restore icon on the desktop.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have one, you can also click the <strong>Start<\/strong>\u00a0button, then type <strong>Backup Windows 7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-win7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-775 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-win7.png\" alt=\"win10backup-win7\" width=\"384\" height=\"674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-win7.png 384w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-win7-171x300.png 171w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n3. If your backups are scheduled, you can see when it is the next backup will run. If you want to run a backup on demand, just click the <strong>Back up now<\/strong> button (make sure all of your programs are closed out first!)<\/p>\n<h2>If your backup drive is full, you\u2019ll need to delete older backups to make room for new ones.<\/h2>\n<p>1. On the Windows Backup main screen, click \u201cManage Space\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-managespace.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-777\" src=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-managespace.png\" alt=\"win10backup-managespace\" width=\"871\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-managespace.png 871w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-managespace-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-managespace-768x504.png 768w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-managespace-700x460.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 871px) 100vw, 871px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Then, click \u201cView Backups\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-viewbackups.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-778\" src=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-viewbackups.png\" alt=\"win10backup-viewbackups\" width=\"642\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-viewbackups.png 642w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backup-viewbackups-300x252.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n3. Delete one or more OLDER BACKUPS to free up space. Be careful to NOT delete the LAST and ONLY backup or you\u2019ll have no backups!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backups-delete.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-779\" src=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backups-delete.png\" alt=\"win10backups-delete\" width=\"598\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backups-delete.png 598w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/win10backups-delete-300x237.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Optional- if you also have a removable RDX backup system in place, check the removable cartridge (RDX) backups, and rotate the cartridge.<\/h1>\n<p>RDX backups should \u00a0be checked and rotated often. \u00a0If you have a big disaster that&#8217;s destroyed the computer and the backup drive, you&#8217;ll appreciate having an off-line backup.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>On your desktop, look for an &#8220;RDX Log&#8221; file. \u00a0Double click it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-log-file.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-786\" src=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-log-file.png\" alt=\"rdx-log-file\" width=\"85\" height=\"97\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. In this file, you&#8217;ll see a start date &amp; time at the top, a bunch of stuff in the middle, and an end date &amp; time at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure the start date &amp; time is recent. \u00a0This is the last time the RDX backups <strong>started<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll also see a log of the actual backup. \u00a0This should look consistent day to day. \u00a0If it suddenly and drastically changes, then something may be wrong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-start.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-787\" src=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-start.png\" alt=\"rdx-backup-start\" width=\"958\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-start.png 958w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-start-300x173.png 300w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-start-768x443.png 768w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-start-700x404.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 958px) 100vw, 958px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0Scroll down to the bottom, and note the end date &amp; time. \u00a0It should be &#8220;about the same&#8221; day to day. \u00a0 \u00a0 If the backup was taking 4 hours, and suddenly it&#8217;s down to 5 minutes, something may be wrong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-success.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-790\" src=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-success-1024x481.png\" alt=\"rdx-backup-success\" width=\"660\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-success-1024x481.png 1024w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-success-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-success-768x361.png 768w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-success-700x329.png 700w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-backup-success.png 1064w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll also see a <strong>Successful Backup<\/strong> message. \u00a0This indicates the backup was successful, and that it&#8217;s OK to rotate the cartridge.<\/p>\n<p>4. \u00a0Locate and RDX eject icon on the desktop and right click it<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-drive-icon.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-788\" src=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-drive-icon.png\" alt=\"rdx-drive-icon\" width=\"77\" height=\"86\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-eject.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-789\" src=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-eject.png\" alt=\"rdx-eject\" width=\"221\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-eject.png 221w, https:\/\/redlance.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/rdx-eject-173x300.png 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>5. \u00a0The cartridge will now eject, and you can put in &#8220;the next&#8221; cartridge.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: You don&#8217;t want to remove the cartridge unless it has a good backup on it.
